Night coverage is not a shift

The money in a lot of these shops shows up when America is on the couch. That is not a secret and it is not a strategy document. It is just when the fans are bored, paid, and holding their phones. The bench, meanwhile, is usually hired where the owner can interview in the afternoon — same city, same timezone, sometimes the same group of people who already know each other. Those two facts do not care about each other. So “night coverage” becomes a phrase that means whoever did not log off.

That person is tired. They have already done a day. They have already been “on” for eight hours of small talk and rejected closes. Now they are the United States evening. They take the easy close or they take nothing. They are not going to sit carefully with a whale who only talks after ten and needs an hour of nothing before a price. The whale who only talks after ten never meets a fresh voice. They meet the leftover of someone else’s shift.

The creator notices the gap before you do. Her phone is still lighting up. The replies are slower, or thinner, or suddenly very salesy at 11pm because the person on the other end wants to be done. She starts answering “just this once,” which is never once. You are now paying a night shift and a founder and a creator for the same hour, and only one of them sounds like her. The other two are either exhausted or doing damage control.

A timezone is a product. Treat it like a roster accident and you will lose it.

Awake is not assigned.

Name the hours. Write them on a calendar the way you would write a store’s opening time. Name the person who owns that block — not a rotation that means “we’ll see,” a person who knows that from ten to two this account is theirs. If no one wants the block, that is a pay problem or a hiring geography problem. It is not solved by a group chat that says “who’s up.” “Who’s up” is how you get a volunteer who already worked today and a whale who can feel it.

Some shops try to paper over this with a follow-the-sun fantasy they cannot staff. They have two people in the right zone and they call it coverage. Then one of them is sick, or quits, or just has a life, and you are back to leftover evening. If the US night is where the week is made, hire for it first, not after the day team is “full.” The day team is easier to hire. That is why everyone has one.

Coverage you cannot point to on a calendar is not coverage. It is hope with a laptop. Hope does not sit with a whale at midnight. Hope logs off.
